Nutri-Rehab: Unlocking the Role of Nutrition in ACL Recovery

A recent systematic review investigated the impact of nutrition and dietary supplementation on rehabilitation outcomes and the return to sport following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Analyzing fifteen eligible studies, the research highlights that a high protein intake combined with physical therapy significantly improves muscle mass retention and functional recovery.

Additionally, specific supplements like flaxseed oil and leucine showed potential benefits, while correcting vitamin D deficiencies proved important for mitigating muscle loss.

However, due to considerable study variability and high risks of bias, current data remains insufficient to establish definitive nutritional guidelines for returning to sports safely.

Consequently, the review emphasizes the need for higher-quality research to formulate personalized nutritional protocols for post-surgical recovery.

Did you know that only about half of all athletes undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) successfully return to competitive sports, and up to 23% of young athletes suffer a secondary ACL injury? While physical therapy is essential to recovery, an underrated player often decides the speed and success of rehabilitation: targeted nutrition.

In this lesson, we will explore the systematic evidence evaluating how nutrition—from daily dietary protein to specialized supplements—impacts recovery, muscle preservation, and functional outcomes after ACL surgery.
