This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the impact of beetroot juice, a natural source of dietary nitrate, on athletic performance during sprint-based exercises.
By examining 23 randomised trials, the researchers assessed how this supplement affects power output, fatigue, and neuromuscular responses in active adults.
The findings suggest that while the juice may improve the speed of power development and handgrip strength, it does not consistently enhance short-distance sprint times or repeated-sprint ability. Furthermore, the supplement showed no significant effect on heart rate, perceived exertion, or jumping performance.
Ultimately, the authors conclude that evidence remains too low-certainty to recommend its routine use for improving sprint performance.
