This study evaluated the effects of bicarbonate and carbohydrate co-ingestion using a novel energy gel format during prolonged moderate-intensity cycling on subsequent sprint and time-trial performance in trained cyclists.
Eleven participants completed a randomized, crossover trial involving three hours of steady-state cycling while consuming carbohydrates either with or without bicarbonate, followed by a power profiling battery in a fatigued state.
The results demonstrated that co-ingesting bicarbonate significantly improved twelve-minute time-trial performance compared to carbohydrates alone, while maintaining minimal gastrointestinal discomfort.
Furthermore, blood acid-base balance metrics such as pH and bicarbonate concentrations were significantly elevated following the bicarbonate intervention. Ultimately, these findings suggest that incorporating bicarbonate into endurance energy gels provides a practical strategy to enhance fatigue resistance and high-intensity performance after extended exercise.
